Install from the source, with context

Check the package, the agent and the runtime before installing. A source snapshot is a reference; the complete upstream package or current product distribution supplies the actual installation.

Updated 2026-10-04

Read the pinned source first

Open the skill’s source and installation link. Identify the maintainer, the pinned revision and the package format. A standalone SKILL.md reference can omit scripts, assets or plugin configuration; follow the full package’s instructions when those resources are required. If a source is deprecated, use the current distribution linked by the maintainer rather than assuming the old repository remains an installable package.

Confirm support for your agent

The agent labels on a skill page record the author’s declarations. They are not the result of a compatibility test across every agent. Ask your agent to read its current skill installation guidance and the package instructions before choosing a directory or command. A skill that depends on a built-in tool, an MCP connection or a particular product may need that exact environment.

Prepare the declared dependencies

Separate installing the instructions from running the workflow. Read the dependency and runtime-cost fields, then confirm which local tools, accounts or provider services are needed. Free source access does not make an external image model, a design service or a video-rendering environment free to use.

  • The exact package or current distribution is identified, not only the SKILL.md text.
  • Required tools, accounts, files and possible runtime fees are understood.
  • The intended agent and installation route agree with the source instructions.

Install, then check discovery

Use the package’s documented installation route, keeping its supporting files together. Inspect any supplied command before running it and check existing files before replacing them. Follow your agent’s documented reload or session procedure, ask for the skill by name and confirm that it can find the required resources. A successful installation still needs an output check on a small task.

Prepare an installation with your agent

These prompts request an inspection and an installation plan. They do not assume every skill supports every agent, prescribe a universal directory or authorize running an unknown script.

I use Claude Code. Help me prepare installation of this skill: [skill page or pinned source]. First read the full package and its current upstream installation instructions. Confirm declared Claude Code support, required files, runtime tools and any account or service costs. Read my agent’s current skill-directory guidance before proposing a directory or command. Show the installation plan and how to check discovery; ask before replacing existing files or running a supplied script.
